Sheffield University Turner MuseumThis extremely fine glass mosaic shows the historical glass making centres across the world, and was a gift from Professor Turner and his children to the memory of his first wife, Mary Isobel Turner, who died in 1939. Designed by James Hogan and made by James Powell & Sons (Whitefriars) London, it was completed in 1941, but not erected until 1945. Originally it was placed in the Turner Museum at Elmfield, but has now been dismantled and redisplayed in the new Turner Museum at Sheffield University. During an in-house attempt to resite the mosaic, it separated in two. Investigations undertaken by Heritage Tile Conservation revealed the mosaic had been mounted on two seperate slate beds, dowel holes were found in each half, but no dowels. Approximately one third of the right hand section of the tesserae had become live and separated from its slate bed, the left hand side had suffered a similar fate. Heritage Tile Conservation was commissioned to restore and remount the mosaic.
