Case Study

Pr
oject: Iznik Chimney
Client: Victoria & Albert Museum

We were commissioned to remove, conserve and remount the Iznik ceramic tiled fireplace situated in the corridor adjacent to Gallery 33. The fireplace was to form part of a touring exhibition of Islamic artefacts, so it was essential to design and construct a lightweight, demountable structure to support the exhibit. Paddington Green Children’s Hospital

Fifteen tube lined pictorial tile panels were located within the Out Patient’s department of Paddington Green Children’s Hospital. They were made by Craven Dunnill & Co (circa 1911). A further two wards still contain pictorial tile panels by Doulton and W. B. Simpson & Sons (circa 1895).

In 1995, the hospital closed and Heritage Tile Conservation was commissioned to remove, restore and mount the panels. The original intention was to relocate the panels to the new St Mary’s Hospital, but the panels were listed and planning dictated the panels should stay in the refurbished Housing Association building and Doctor’s surgery currently occupying the site.
