Case Study
Project: Iznik Chimney
Client: Victoria & Albert Museum
We were commissioned to remove, conserve and remount the Iznik ceramic tiled fireplace situated in the corridor adjacent to Gallery 33. The fireplace was to form part of a touring exhibition of Islamic artefacts, so it was essential to design and construct a lightweight, demountable structure to support the exhibit. Charing Cross Hospital, The Strand, London
The four tile panels illustrated were rescued from this building and were made by three manufacturers, W B Simpson, Pilkingtons and Doulton (circa 1895). Six of the Simpson tile panels were restored and relocated to the reception area of the new Charing Cross Hospital in Fulham Palace Road. Several panels are currently displayed at the Jackfield Tile Museum and three panels, including a section of hunting frieze were returned to the Charing Cross building, The Strand, which is currently occupied by The Metropolitan Police.
