oject: Iznik Chimney
Client: Victoria & Albert Museum

We were commissioned to remove, conserve and remount the Iznik ceramic tiled fireplace situated in the corridor adjacent to Gallery 33. The fireplace was to form part of a touring exhibition of Islamic artefacts, so it was essential to design and construct a lightweight, demountable structure to support the exhibit. Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery - Boris Anrep Mosaic (1883 - 1969)

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery commissioned Heritage Tile Conservation Ltd to lift a Boris Anrep mosaic, which was on display in the museum.

The mosaic ‘ Various Movements In The day Of A Lady Of Fashion’ dimensions 388.5 long x 313 wide x 8cms thick, was commissioned circa 1922, by the eminent lawyer William Jowitt for the vestibule of his London house in Upper Brook Street. Anrep’s theme for the Jowitt commission was the witty and light-hearted portrayal of Mrs Lesley Jowitt. Modernistic medallions, set into a severe green marble background, depict her engaged on her daily round: telephoning from her bed dressed in pyjamas; in her bath; applying her make-up; at an art exhibition of African sculpture; at the theatre; at her dress maker’s; preparing cocktails; and dancing at a night club.

Once the Boris Anrep mosaic was lifted the mosaic pavement beneath required extensive cleaning. These images show the gallery being cleaned and a close up shots of the mosaic.
